iPad iOS 4.2 Update. - Blog: Inside Montessorium -... →
After this update, a number of users wrote to inquire about the sound on Intro to Math and Intro to Letters. It seemed that it wasn’t working properly. What happened was, Apple transformed the landscape lock button into a mute button. Hence, the volume was often muted when first opening the apps. Hey, Apple? Stories like this are a sign that you are fucking up. Fix this...

Sample iPhone (Wi-Fi) to Arduino (Ethernet) app «... →
Uses jQuery/HTML to control the state of an Arduino equipped with an Ethernet shield. Which means you can control pretty much anything from your iPhone or Android device, with a little HTML coding, about $50 in electronics, and no jailbreaking required.

True Stuff: The Steam Trombone →
In 1890… …Someone in Scranton built a steam-powered trombone. The people of Scranton then complained to the court, or the police, or someone with injunctive powers, who put an end to the steam-trombonery. Fortunately for the world, internet sleuths have found the complaints, which are available for you to read at the previous finely-crafted link. The miscreant has even procured certain...

"Good Ideas Grow on Paper" →
nikf: A terrific article from the Standardistas: Great designers have one thing in common: their design process is centred on ideas; ideas that are more often than not developed on paper. Though it’s often tempting to take the path of least resistance, turning to the computer in the headlong rush to complete a project (often in the face of formidable client pressure), resist the urge and –...

Interactive Sketching Notation →
The interactive sketching notation is an emerging visual language which affords the representation of interface states and event-based user actions. Through a few simple and standardized rules, what the user sees (drawn in greys and blacks) and does (drawn in red) are unified into a coherent sketching system. This unification of both interface and use, intends to enable designers to tell more...

Adactio: Journal—One web →
Jeremy Keith: The most commonly-heard criticism of serving up the same website to everyone is that the existing pages are too large, either in size or content. I agree. Far too many URLs resolve to bloated pages locked to a single-width layout. But the solution is not to make leaner, faster pages just for mobile users; the answer is to make leaner, faster pages for everybody. Amen.

The New York Times has snuck in an update to its hyperlink feature. The new feature allows users to link to and highlight individual sentences and paragraphs in its web stories. While it could be a tad complicated for an average reader, it’s a great tool for writers and bloggers who frequently link to NYTimes stories. Targeted highlighting API. There’s a wordpress plugin, too.
